I grew up in the 80's and always dreamed of doing all the things I watched on the TV.
I currently work for WNEP and am very proud to be a member of the 'team'!
I am however sad that since I interned and was hired, the best things that made us stand above the rest all seem to be disappearing one at a time.
Hearing your stories and 'the way things were' make me smile. I wasnt behind the scenes then like I am now. Things are changin' but that is the story of life as I recall. I will check back on your blog often...keep the old memories coming! :-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-5593062533040566602009-04-23T10:00:00.000-04:002009-04-23T10:00:00.000-04:00Wow Paul, the detail your remember of that chase!!...Wow Paul, the detail your remember of that chase!! This blog was very nice to read - and very sad at the same time. Skycam was just something I took for granted -never thought it would be grounded.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-12543245184582592792009-02-11T12:25:00.000-05:002009-02-11T12:25:00.000-05:00Paul,I'm amazed at the detail you remember. You are...Paul,
I'm amazed at the detail you remember.
You are right, Skycam 16 was a station personality. In fact research then showed it to be the most recognized - number one - WNEP personality.
I was there then, having moved up the org chart a little, but Jay was the news director who drove the station's coverage with the correct use of a news helicopter. But it was you who made Skycam a nearly human personality and deserve credit for its ultimate value to the station. This was due in no small part to the promotion and sale of the Revell models for charity.
By the way, that researcher was Bruce Northcott, now with Crawford, Johnson and Northcott.
EldenAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-19921381043769542882009-02-11T10:39:00.000-05:002009-02-11T10:39:00.000-05:00Hey Paul, Saw the link on ShopTalk and it sure ...Hey Paul,
Saw the link on ShopTalk and it sure brought back memories. As an intern at NEP in 1980 I often flew on the chopper with Jack. I was supposed to be on a flight to Harrisburg that nearly crashed when the engine seized. But of course, Jack cooly managed to restart the motor while radioing maydays. While at NEP I worked with Absher on the desk, modeled sleepwear for the commercial production team, and once had to make an emergency run to buy hamsters for the old Dialing for Dollars contest. Newman was the News Director. He gave me a "B" grade for my work there. And when I asked why, Jay told me "I don't give "A's". Jay, if you're reading this, I still haven't forgotten that. Paul, you won't remember but we met several times over the years-- mostly when I badgered you for a reporting job. Good to see you're still out there.
Steve BauerStevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12698845024757230077noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-59601783112219317482009-02-09T18:53:00.000-05:002009-02-09T18:53:00.000-05:00If WBRE/WYOU were competitive, Skycam would still ...If WBRE/WYOU were competitive, Skycam would still be flying, but it’s not.

I’m sorry to say that after growing up in NEPA and being a part of its local television operations, this is a sad day.

Local TV is in the process of running NEP into the ground.

I wonder how long it can live off its previous reputation.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-51154977220695177342009-02-05T23:39:00.000-05:002009-02-05T23:39:00.000-05:00The realities of tv today probably left the WNEP G...The realities of tv today probably left the WNEP GM little choice.

My heart says he should have found a way to keep the helicopter, my head knows big time bean counters control the medium now. So few broadcasters are left.

What would be really sad is to find out the owners of WNEP fly a corporate jet while the station's chopper gets grounded.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-27780497119020775372009-02-05T16:01:00.000-05:002009-02-05T16:01:00.000-05:00Thanks for the memories. I am retired from TV news after 26 yrs in the biz in the Tampa Bay area--we covered just 12 counties and I couldn't imagine filling 7 hrs of local news without Skyfox. We used our pilot as a reporter to cover some of the most amazing stories. Such memories...

From what I understand, WNEP will instead rely on viewer-submitted video from the far reaches of the area. But no amount of shaky cell phone video can compare to Skycam.

It really is the end of an era in local news coverage.Howard Bealehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06098695626701915135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-26328163360154856442009-02-05T09:26:00.000-05:002009-02-05T09:26:00.000-05:00Well said Paul.Skycam's value was its identity, sh...Well said Paul.

Skycam's value was its identity, showing Channel 16 was willing to go the extra step to get a story.

Skycam could go where crews or civillians with video cameras couldn't. When you saw Skycam flying overhead, you always tuned in to see what they were shooting.

That won't happen anymore. Newswatch 16 is now like Eyewitness News -- limited to the ground.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
