John had an enormous ego, but as one who didn't have the experience and worldliness of those in management, I have to say I learned a hell of a lot from him, from Giselle, and from Barbara. Every series became a learning experience. (At least it was in those days. Things changed, with some of the lame "readers" that filled the anchor chairs.) Only John could write, and get away with a 35-second lead-in to a story. Let's see -- how many times can I change the chroma key graphic? John was a handful, but at least he was a journalist. They don't make 'em like him anymore. I was at the Hambrick home quite often in those days.

His name came up in conversation yesterday, so I decided to do some
"google-ing" and came across this blog.

The author of the post hits a lot of nails on the head. The best way I can attest to his vanity would be to describe the family den. No pictures of the family, but literally dozens of pictures of John with various celebs and icons of journalism. It was a like the John Hambrick museum. I always thought it was incredibly ego-maniacal.

On the other side of the coin, though, I believe he truly loved his family, and he was nicer to me than I, a young obnoxious degenrate in those days, deserved. I wish them all the best.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-8809888177605507362008-02-29T16:20:00.000-05:002008-02-29T16:20:00.000-05:00A brief update. On February 28th the date of John's birth was changed on his Wikipedia page to read February 12, 1940, by someone logged in as "Wtimrock."

Wtimrock is the apparent creator of the page, and the contributor of all the major edits listed under the Wikipedia "history" tab. I don't know who he/she is, so I can't vouch for this new date either.Tying My Shoes...https://www.blogger.com/profile/08012190505384041568noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-90917374114277818902008-02-13T13:25:00.000-05:002008-02-13T13:25:00.000-05:00Jack—The “peg” for my posting was the John Hambric...Jack—
The “peg” for my posting was the John Hambrick article on Wikipedia, which lists his birth date as February 12, 1941. I’d correct it myself, but no one has provided me with the actual date of his birth.

I never for a second doubted John’s "Playhouse 90" credentials: I doubted that he was born in 1941. If I was wrong about the date I apologize for that factual error. The rest is, of course, opinion. I appreciate that you acknowledge that I’m entitled to mine, as you are to yours.Tying My Shoes...https://www.blogger.com/profile/08012190505384041568noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-71793706948132488452008-02-13T10:12:00.000-05:002008-02-13T10:12:00.000-05:00I was forwarded this blog article about JH. They're as real as the first lunar landing.

It's unkind to drag his family into this. I don't think they did anything to you. And you have that all wrong too.

You have the right to write and say whatever you wish, where you wish. It doesn't mean you should.

It's surprising that someone with your intelligence and experience would be so malicious and careless with facts. Exorcise your demons more responsibility please.

John's sonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-26318131826148485842008-02-13T08:32:00.000-05:002008-02-13T08:32:00.000-05:009:52AM—Thanks for writing. You're certainly right ...9:52AM—
Thanks for writing. You're certainly right about John's talent. As I mentioned, his reporting after "Andrew" was masterful. He had all the skills.

One of the things that disappointed me most was that he so often didn't play "full tilt." I don't want my surgeon to have an off day—I don't want my airline pilot to lose focus—I don't want my lawyer to lack commitment—I don't want my anchor just going through the motions. Now, TV news isn’t often life-or-death, but broadcast news is less forgiving than other professions in one way: that's your face out there every night for everyone to see. There's no place to hide.
---------------
4:26PM—
Thanks for writing. I got John's birth date from "Wikipedia." One purpose of the post was to question the date's accuracy: guess you do, too. If you know the correct date you might want to go to the Hambrick Wikipedia page and make the correction.

You called me "Ms. former News Director?" Wow, I've been called many things over the years, but I've never been mistaken for a woman.
---------------
I also got a personal email from a former WCIX co-worker who wrote, "As my dad used to say...'If you don't have anything nice to say'..."

He said my bitterness was showing, that I should exorcise my demons. True. Maybe this blog entry is a way to serve penance.

I feel a certain guilt about my feelings toward John. But I had high hopes for our relationship when we first met, and those hopes were quickly dashed. 39 years in the business and I've dealt with bigger egos in bigger markets. The fact that John couldn't even pretend to respect me was (and remains) a bitter pill to swallow.Tying My Shoes...https://www.blogger.com/profile/08012190505384041568noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-32707072311393113402008-02-12T16:26:00.000-05:002008-02-12T16:26:00.000-05:00This hack job has sour grapes all over it.You were...This hack job has sour grapes all over it.

You were the news director? You are totally lost when it comes to facts.

BTW, I knew John well.

You are about 1 1/2 years off on John's birthday (facts please), but I am sure he would appreciate it. Come on news director, sources, facts! Check them!

WFOR has "uninvited" roughly 30 anchors since John left. Tell me one main anchor at that station that lasted more than 4 years in the main spot. Let me save you some time. None. It's misleading the way you characterize it.

His son was a reporter in Orlando, not Tampa, (facts please) at WFTV or WESH I think. He had more experience than some working at WCIX. WCIX was a loser, market 60 station operating in market 16 and a step down from almost any market at the time. No ratings, no viewers, no equipment and no staff. You know this if you worked there. You were at the helm.

Don't be a whinny news director and blame one anchor. Don't blame your failure on John. If you couldn't take control over staff than you weren't the person for the job.

As far as his personality, can you tell me one news anchor that is not vain? Come on.

You have some things right. John was a handful and he was a fighter, but he was a hell of interesting guy if you got to know him outside the newsroom.

If you want to do a hit job, do the right thing and check the facts Ms. former News Director or at least wait until the man's real birthday comes up.

If you are no longer in the biz, well, that is understandable considering the absence of facts here. But you are a clever writer, perhaps fiction was your real calling.

One more thing. Check your facts!

We love you John! Hope you are well!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482376402724312298.post-10720594201913616112008-02-12T09:52:00.000-05:002008-02-12T09:52:00.000-05:00I worked with John in Cleveland at WEWS 1970-71 as...I worked with John in Cleveland at WEWS 1970-71 as his 11:00 PM Producer. It was a great time and he was terrific then. I remember a number of after show night visits to his home to "sing" folk songs (with John on guitar)and listen to his album. (I still have a couple of signed copies around the house!) He knew how to write news copy well, tie one story to the next, and tease what was coming up....I learned a lot from John. (He was almost as good a writer as you are!)
Regards,
BobAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
